It was a very hot month, the grass was turning Brown and the water levels were lowering and the forest was just waiting for a disaster to happen. Then, one day some careless person threw a lighter match, left a fire burning or forgot to crush their cigarette and it light the grass on fire! That grass fire spread across the forest where a man saw the fire and reported it from the look out tower. The Fire department soon showed up with equipment and men. But they couldn’t get to the fire immediately because of the trees. They removed the trees and bulldozers set up fire lines. Then the wind blew the fire across the fireline and the fire crossed the line. Animals ran away, but some got confused and ran straight into the fire. The fire was getting so out of control that soldiers had to come and help them, just because ONE person was careless. Some soldiers almost died when there was a ground blaze and they had to rush to build the firewall. They succeeded but not for long. The winds were blowing at nearly 40 miles per hour and then the fire jumped at them and expanded. They ran to a pile of rocks where they sheltered until the fire and smoke cleared for it to be safe. They then got up where they found a bear hanging on to a tree. They helped him down and carried him through his once home, now pile of ashes. The fire had lasted for over five days and burned over 17,000 acres of wood. The soldiers took the best to get treated for his wounds and he eventually recovered. The soldiers gave him a name “Smokey” pretty soon, everyone knew the name and story of Smokey The Bear. He was flown into Washington DC. On the way he saw what was left of his home. When he landed he was met with the press and reporters. Smokey posed for posters and pretty soon, he was everwhere, even on the radio and television. After that he got a home in the Washington zoo. As he grew up he told people how much he hates forest fired and how they are such a waste of wood. He tells us to remember to always put out our campfires, don’t drop our matched and to always crush out our cigarettes (don’t smoke.) We should all remember what Smokey says “Only you can prevent forest fires.”
